A yoctoampere (yA) is the smallest SI unit prefix applied to electrical current, representing 10⁻²⁴ amperes. It belongs to the yocto- prefix family, adopted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in 2022 alongside other extreme-scale prefixes for use in emerging measurement domains. At this scale, current becomes theoretical rather than practical; no conventional instrument can detect or produce a yoctoampere with present technology.
The yocto- prefix follows the naming convention of the SI system, which uses Greek and Latin roots to denote powers of 1,000. Yocto comes from the Latin word octo, meaning eight, marking it as the eighth power-of-1,000 prefix below the base unit. Earlier prefixes like pico (10⁻¹²) and femto (10⁻¹⁵) are occasionally encountered in real metrology; yoctoampere exists almost exclusively in theoretical physics and standards documentation.
Yoctoampere appears primarily in quantum physics, where particle currents at subatomic scales may be expressed using SI units for consistency, even though measurement occurs through indirect methods like charge-coupled devices or Faraday cups. Semiconductor research occasionally references attocurrents (10⁻¹⁸ A) or femtocurrents in tunnel junctions; yoctoampere sits far below even these extremes. Its main function is standardization: having a defined unit ensures that theorists and standards bodies can express arbitrarily small currents without resorting to scientific notation or dimensionless quantities.
In practical metrology, even laboratory-grade electrometers plateau around the femtoampere range when measuring static leakage currents or surface charge. Shot noise in photodiodes sets a practical floor closer to the picoampere scale. The yoctoampere represents the SI system's completeness rather than any real measurement capability, similar to how zeptoseconds or yoctometers exist in standards but not in workable instruments.
