Gobbing is the deliberate placement of mining waste, known as gob or gob stuff, back into the void left behind after coal extraction. In underground coal mining, once the coal seam is removed from a section, the cavity would become unstable and dangerous without support. Rather than leave air space, operators pack the empty room with coarse refuse, stone fragments, and other non-saleable material excavated during the mining process itself. This fills the void progressively and helps support the overlying strata, reducing surface subsidence and the risk of sudden collapses.

The composition of gob material varies by site geology. It typically consists of stone from roof falls, dirt bands within the seam, tailings from coal washing, and reject coal too impure or small to market. In modern operations, some mines use specially engineered crushed stone or recycled demolition material when site waste is insufficient. The material must be coarse enough to settle firmly and allow some drainage; fine clay or wet slimes can compact into an impermeable mass that traps methane or water, creating hazards rather than safety benefits.

Gobbing methods differ between room-and-pillar and longwall mining systems. In room-and-pillar work, crews deliberately pack gob into worked-out rooms behind the active mining face, either manually or by conveyor. In longwall mining, the hydraulic roof supports collapse the roof progressively over the panel as the face advances, and the resulting broken material forms a natural gob column. Some longwall operations augment this with deliberate placement of coarse waste to improve packing density.

Why the name matters: the word gob likely derives from Old English and Irish roots meaning lump or mass. The verb gobbing, meaning to spit, comes from the same root but is unrelated to mining usage in origin, though the association with throwing or ejecting material may have reinforced the term's adoption in the industry.

Poorly managed gobbing creates serious problems. Excessive settlement of gob causes continued surface subsidence years after mining ends. Wet gob in coal seams can ignite spontaneously from oxidation, burning uncontrollably underground and contaminating the surrounding coal. Conversely, insufficient gobbing leaves large voids that collapse suddenly, sometimes years later, dropping overlying rock and damaging infrastructure above. Regulatory pressure in most countries now requires documented gobbing plans that specify material type, placement method, and compaction targets for each mining area.
