swad: the worthless dirt at a coal seam's floor

A swad is a thin band of dirt, clay, shale, or other barren material that lies immediately beneath a coal seam. It forms the boundary between the coal and the rock below, and miners must remove or work around it during extraction. The swad itself has no commercial value and must be cleared away to reach clean coal; leaving swad mixed with the extracted coal reduces its grade and heating value.

The thickness of a swad varies considerably, from a fraction of an inch to several inches depending on the geology of the seam. Some seams have no swad at all, while others have a persistent layer that runs the length of the working face. Hard, competent swad can make the undercut more difficult, since it resists the cutting tools; soft, friable swad may crumble and create dust problems during extraction.

Swad and cutting strategy

In hand-loading or machine-loading operations, miners must judge how far below the coal to cut or scrape. Cut too shallow and swad remains attached to the coal. Cut too deep and you waste effort removing extra stone that should have been left in place. This calculation becomes more critical in thin seams or where the swad is particularly hard.

The term itself reflects the practical speech of the coalfield: swad is an old word for a lump or strip of something, used in mining dialect across Britain and North America. It is distinct from blaes (the harder stone directly above the coal) and from the general overburden, because swad specifically marks the lower contact of the seam. Recognizing the swad and working efficiently through it has always been a mark of competent coalface labour.
