A technique where gold foil or another metallic foil is applied using heat and pressure from an engraved block or die to emboss designs or patterns onto a surface.

Gold blocking transfers thin metallic foil onto a substrate (usually paper, board, or cloth) using a heated metal die and pressure. The die, which carries an engraved or relief pattern, is pressed against foil that sits on top of the material being decorated. Heat, typically 150 to 200 degrees Celsius, activates an adhesive layer on the foil's underside, causing it to bond instantly to the surface. When the die lifts, the foil adheres only where the pattern made contact, leaving crisp, bright impressions.
The foil itself is a laminate: a thin layer of aluminum, copper, or other metal (usually 0.5 to 1 micron thick) bonded to a plastic film backing, typically polyester or cellulose acetate. This backing allows the foil to be wound on rolls and fed through blocking machines without tearing. The adhesive layer between foil and backing must release cleanly when heat and pressure are applied, otherwise the foil sticks to the die instead of the substrate.
Machine types and operation
Hand-operated platen presses are common in small shops: the operator positions foil and substrate, pulls a lever to bring the heated die down, holds it briefly, then releases. Industrial machines use automatic feeding, heated platens or roller systems, and precise pressure adjustment. Rotary machines, which use a heated roller or wheel carrying the pattern, run continuously and suit long production runs on flexible materials. Pressure must be calibrated carefully: too little and foil doesn't transfer; too much crushes the substrate or damages fine pattern details.
The technique works best on smooth, non-porous surfaces. Glossy cardboard, leather, cloth, and coated papers accept foil reliably. Uncoated, rough, or absorbent papers often reject the foil because the adhesive cannot form a strong bond quickly enough. Temperature and dwell time (contact duration) vary with foil type and substrate: a typical dwell ranges from 0.5 to 2 seconds. Dies wear gradually and must be replaced after hundreds of thousands of impressions, depending on pressure and material.
Gold blocking is widely used for book covers, packaging, labels, and fine stationery. The term persists even though foil comes in silver, copper, holographic, and colored finishes. Holographic foils, which contain interference patterns within the metal layer, have become common for security and premium branding. The process is sometimes called hot stamping or foil stamping interchangeably, though gold blocking traditionally emphasizes the metallic finish and decorative purpose.
