goring: a diagonal fabric insert that widens seams

A goring is a shaped fabric panel, typically cut on the bias or diagonal grain, sewn into a garment to expand its width without adding a simple straight seam. The bias orientation allows the insert to stretch slightly during sewing and wearing, reducing stress on thread and accommodating body movement. Gores are essential in tailored garments where a smooth, continuous silhouette matters more than bulk at the seam line.

The technique appears most often in skirts, where a gore runs from waistband to hem as a vertical panel. A six-gore skirt uses six of these panels arranged radially; an eight-gore skirt uses eight. Each gore is typically wider at the hem than at the waist, creating a flared or A-line profile. The diagonal grain gives the material slight elasticity perpendicular to the seam, which helps the garment move with the wearer rather than pulling at stress points like the hip or thigh.

Gores also appear in sleeves, bodices, and undergarments. In sleeves, they allow the arm to move forward without fabric pulling across the back shoulder seam. The inserted piece can be cut from the same fabric as the garment body or from a contrasting material, making the goring both functional and decorative. Lace gores in hosiery and lingerie are visible design features as well as structural elements.

The term derives from the Old English word for a wedge-shaped piece of land, which describes the geometric form perfectly: a panel wider at one end than the other. The diagonal cut is critical to goring's success. A gore cut straight along the weft or warp would not stretch at all; the 45-degree bias cut allows controlled give in both directions, which is why poorly placed gores or those cut on grain will pucker, wrinkle, or fail under wear.

In production, gores require precision pattern-making and careful grain marking. Bias-cut gores must be laid out to ensure consistent stretch direction across the garment. Quality control flags issues like skewed seams or inadequate seam allowance where the gore meets adjacent panels. Modern computerized cutting systems make gore layout less error-prone than hand-laying, but the principle remains unchanged: the diagonal orientation is the entire point.
