In mining, gouge is the clay, silt, or other friable material found directly against the wall rock on either side of an ore vein. It forms a distinct layer, usually a few inches to a foot thick, between the solid wall rock and the ore body itself. This material is softer and weaker than both the vein and the host rock, making it a natural plane of weakness in the geology.

Gouge forms when vein-bearing fluids move through rock fractures, chemically altering the wall rock near the contact. The alteration products, often clay minerals, fill the space. In fault zones, gouge results from mechanical grinding and crushing of rock during fault movement, creating a fine, cohesive layer that can be nearly as impermeable as concrete. In quartz veins carrying gold or base metals, wall-rock alteration commonly produces chlorite or sericite gouge.

Practical significance for mining

Miners rely on gouge as a marker. The softer material is easier to remove than solid ore or wall rock, and it signals the location of the vein contact. When drifting along a vein or stoping, recognizing gouge helps crews position themselves correctly relative to ore boundaries. The layer also behaves differently under load, making it a potential failure plane if mine openings intersect it at poor angles.

Gouge presents real challenges in underground work. Its weakness can lead to sudden collapse or spalling if unsupported. Its impermeability can trap water, creating drainage problems. In tightly confined spaces such as narrow veins, gouge layers may prevent the removal of ore without excessive waste dilution or instability. The term itself derives from the soft, easily worked nature of the material, much like the hollow carved by a gouge chisel.
