A ground frame is a fixed mechanical installation at rail level that houses a series of interlocking levers used to operate points (switches) and signals. Unlike a signal box or cabin which sits elevated and typically controls a larger section of track, a ground frame is compact and sited directly where the equipment it governs is located, usually at a junction, siding entrance, or crossover. The frame itself is a cast iron or steel structure anchored to a concrete base, with a typical working height of 1.2 to 1.5 metres, allowing an operator to stand and work the levers comfortably.
Each lever in the frame connects mechanically to its corresponding point or signal through a system of rods, wires, and pulleys. A ground frame might control anywhere from 4 to 20 levers depending on the complexity of the trackwork. The interlocking mechanism, usually consisting of a locking frame and catch plates, prevents conflicting movements: for example, the levers for two opposing points cannot be operated simultaneously, and signals cannot be cleared to a danger aspect before points are properly locked in position. This mechanical interlocking is purely mechanical; there is no electrical control, making ground frames reliable in locations where power supply is unreliable or where simplicity is preferred.
Ground frames are typically operated by signalling staff, railway workers, or level crossing keepers who are stationed nearby or who visit regularly during shift changes. The operator must have clear sightlines to the track and signals controlled by the frame, or must rely on hand signals and radio communication with train crews. On lightly trafficked lines or at minor crossings, a single ground frame may be the only piece of signalling equipment for several miles.
Common failures and maintenance
Mechanical wear in the rod linkages is the most frequent maintenance issue, particularly where long runs of rod connect the frame to distant points or signals. Rust and corrosion in the interlocking mechanism can jam levers or cause them to slip under load. In exposed locations, weathering of the cast iron frame itself requires regular painting. Unlike modern colour-light signalling, ground frames produce no electrical feedback, so a lineman must physically inspect points and signals to confirm they have moved to the commanded position.
Ground frames remain in use on heritage railways, minor branch lines, and at rail crossings in many countries where traffic volumes do not justify installation of power-operated equipment. In newer railway infrastructure, they have been superseded by relay interlocking or computerised signalling systems, but their mechanical reliability and independence from electrical infrastructure make them valuable in remote or low-budget operations.
