A motorcar is a railway vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine or electric motor, carrying its own power source rather than depending on a locomotive. On branch lines, industrial sidings, and heritage railways, these vehicles handle light duties: inspecting track, moving small loads, shuttling maintenance crews, and testing rail condition without the expense of a full train consist.
The petrol and diesel variants dominate industrial and preserved railways. A typical petrol motorcar weighs 2 to 4 tonnes and can carry four to eight passengers plus tools. Diesel versions run heavier, around 5 to 8 tonnes, and offer longer range and better torque on grades. Electric motorcars appear on electrified lines and in underground systems where emissions matter, though their battery or third-rail dependency limits range. Draisines, or track bicycles powered by hand pumps or small engines, sit at the lighter end of the spectrum.
The practical role on the railway
Track maintenance gangs use motorcars to reach remote sections quickly. Inspectors and signal engineers rely on them to patrol lines, check rail wear, and test crossings. During branch line closures or infrequent services, a motorcar moves staff and small freight far more economically than activating a locomotive. They also serve as rescue units, towing disabled trains to the depot when derailments or breakdowns occur on secondary routes.
The term emerged in railway parlance to distinguish these self-contained vehicles from hauled carriages. Early examples, from the 1920s onward, were often converted motor cars fitted with flanged wheels or purpose-built chassis. The name stuck because it reflects the fundamental principle: motor plus carriage equals motorcar.
Wear points include wheel flanges, which groove and flatten with use on poor-quality track, and clutches or gearboxes, which suffer abuse in hands-on operation. Fuel consumption runs high per kilometre because these lightweight vehicles lack the efficiency of heavier trains. Noise and vibration are notorious on older petrol models, making them unpopular for passenger comfort but acceptable for work trains.
