Grow box: enclosed chamber for controlled indoor cultivation

A grow box is a self-contained cabinet or chamber, typically ranging from 60 cm to 2 metres tall and fitted with artificial lighting, ventilation, and climate controls, designed to cultivate plants indoors independent of natural light and seasonal conditions. The walls are usually lined with reflective material, most commonly white plastic or mylar film, to concentrate light onto the canopy. A complete unit houses high-intensity discharge lamps or LED panels, intake and exhaust fans, ducting, carbon filters, and thermostat controls, creating a miniature growing environment in a basement, closet, or spare room.

These systems are essential in commercial horticulture for starting seedlings and propagating cuttings year-round, but their use has expanded into small-scale vegetable production, microgreens cultivation, and specialty herb growing. Home gardeners use them to extend growing seasons or grow plants that require specific climate zones. The internal dimensions and power rating determine what can be grown; a typical 1.2 metre box consumes 400 to 600 watts and produces enough air exchange to support both high-intensity lighting and stable humidity levels around 50 to 70 percent.

Common problems and maintenance

Moisture and heat accumulation are persistent challenges. Inadequate exhaust capacity leads to condensation on internal surfaces, creating ideal conditions for mould and powdery mildew. Similarly, insufficient intake air causes CO2 depletion, slowing photosynthesis; this is why ducted extraction fans must be matched to room volume and ductwork length. Light leaks around doors and seams reduce photoperiod control, which matters critically for flowering plants triggered by precise day-length ratios.

The economics depend heavily on local electricity rates. LED panels, while reducing heat output and power consumption compared to older HPS bulbs, still represent the largest operational cost in most installations. Passive grow boxes rely on ambient room temperature and natural air circulation; active systems use powered fans and controllers that add capital expense but enable reliable results in variable environments.

Terminology varies by region and vendor. In commercial nurseries, a propagation chamber or propagation tent describes temporary fabric enclosures, while rigid grow cabinets or grow chambers are permanent installations. Consumer markets often label any enclosed shelf unit with lights as a grow box, regardless of whether climate control is present.
