Growan is the product of in-situ granite decomposition found in the tin lodes of Cornwall. It forms a loose, sandy gravel composed of feldspar grains, quartz fragments, and clay minerals, the result of feldspar breakdown by percolating water and weathering over geological timescales. Miners encountered growan as an intermediate layer between the hard granite country rock and the tin-bearing vein material itself, and its presence signalled proximity to payable ore.
The material took its name from the village of Growan in the Camborne district, where the phenomenon was particularly well known to working miners. The term became standard across Cornish mining operations by the 19th century, though its use declined sharply after the collapse of tin mining in the region during the 20th century. Today it survives chiefly in geological literature and in historical mining records rather than active industry.
Character and occurrence
Growan typically appeared as a matrix of weathered feldspar and quartz sand mixed with kaolinite clay, ranging from a few feet to several tens of feet thick. Its loose, crumbly texture made it easier to extract than solid granite but more unstable in mine workings; timbering was often required to prevent cave-ins. The composition varied with depth and proximity to mineralised zones, with iron oxide staining common in areas near pyrite-rich ore bodies.
Miners used the presence and character of growan as a practical indicator during exploration. Thick, well-developed growan with high clay content and ochre colouration often suggested nearby tin mineralisation. Its extraction posed a practical problem: shovelling loose material was faster than blasting solid rock, yet the lack of cohesion demanded careful ground support. Where growan extended to shallow depths, surface mining and openwork extraction became possible.
The term never achieved wide currency outside Cornwall. Geologists elsewhere described similar material using general terms such as weathered granite, saprolite, or argillic alteration. Growan thus remains a parochial word, useful for reading 19th-century mining reports from the southwest but without application in modern quarrying or industrial geology.
