Trade is the rock, soil, and mineral-poor material excavated during mining operations that has no immediate economic value and must be managed as waste. Unlike ore, which contains the target mineral at concentrations worth extracting, trade consists of the country rock and lower-grade material removed to access ore bodies or exposed during surface mining. The volume of trade generated typically far exceeds the volume of ore recovered, making its disposal one of the largest operational and environmental considerations in any mine.

In hard rock mining, trade emerges from both open pit and underground operations. Open pit mines generate waste rock stripped from above the ore body, called overburden; underground mines produce trade from development drives, stopes, and other excavation. In coal mining, trade refers to the non-coal material removed alongside the seam. The composition varies widely: granite and schist in metal mines, shale and sandstone in coal operations, or limestone and clay in quarries. A single large copper mine may produce millions of tonnes of trade annually, while the ore yield amounts to mere thousands of tonnes.

Trade disposal consumes capital and land. Large mines construct dedicated waste rock dumps or tailings storage facilities engineered to prevent erosion, seepage, and slope failure. Some operations attempt to reuse trade as backfill material within the mine, reducing surface disturbance, or crush it for aggregate in concrete and road construction. Acid mine drainage occurs when sulfide minerals within trade oxidize upon exposure to air and water, producing acidic leachate that can contaminate groundwater for decades after mining ceases.

The term trade derives from older mining parlance where it simply denoted the ordinary material a miner encountered, as opposed to the valuable mineral being sought. It remains in use principally in British and Commonwealth mining districts, though American operators often use the terms waste rock, overburden, or spoil. European mines frequently refer to it as gangue when discussing the non-ore minerals present, though trade and gangue are not precisely synonymous; gangue is the worthless mineral component of ore, while trade is all excavated material lacking economic value.

Modern mining economics increasingly treats trade as a processing constraint rather than pure waste. Lower ore grades mean higher waste ratios; a mine processing ore grading 0.5 percent copper generates roughly 200 tonnes of trade for every tonne of contained copper. Geotechnical engineers assess trade stability, toxicity, and acid potential before extraction begins, and environmental permits now routinely specify trade management protocols. The life-cycle cost of mining includes perpetual responsibility for trade storage, making waste minimization and reuse central to project feasibility.
