Grundy is pig iron cast into small pellets or granules by pouring molten metal into water. The rapid cooling fractures the solidifying metal into irregular chunks typically ranging from pea-sized to marble-sized fragments. This form makes pig iron easier to handle, transport, and feed into furnaces compared to the large brittle ingots produced by conventional casting into sand beds.

The process is straightforward: molten pig iron from the blast furnace is poured into a vessel of cool water, where violent boiling and thermal shock break the metal into fragments as it solidifies. The granules are then dried to remove surface moisture. The resulting material flows freely and can be metered precisely into induction furnaces, cupolas, and scrap melting operations. Density and composition remain uniform throughout the batch, unlike mixed scrap charges.

Grundy is most valuable in foundry work, where consistent charge composition directly affects casting quality. A foundry melting basic iron for ductile-iron production can proportion grundy with carefully weighed steel scrap and other additions, maintaining tight chemical limits on carbon, manganese, and sulfur that would be impossible with segregated pig iron chunks. It also reduces refractory wear in the furnace since smaller pieces melt more evenly, avoiding localized hot spots.

The main drawback is surface oxidation. Freshly cooled grundy contains a thin oxide layer that must either be removed by pickling or tolerated as a mild dilution of the charge. Moisture absorption during storage can also cause problems if granules are stored in damp conditions; caking forces operators to break material apart before charging. Some foundries prefer to crush standard pig iron rather than pay the premium for commercial grundy.

The term grundy originates in British foundry practice, though the exact etymology is unclear; it may derive from a person's name or a dialectal word. It is less common in North American trade, where the process is sometimes called shot iron or simply referred to as pelletized pig iron. The concept has existed since at least the early 20th century and remains standard in European and UK foundries that prioritize charge consistency over labor cost.
