GSL: how much timber a forest actually holds right now
Growing stock level is the total volume of live wood in a forest at any given moment, measured in cubic meters per hectare or cords per acre depending on region. It includes all trees above a specified minimum diameter (often 10 cm breast height in European forestry), whether they are merchantable or not. GSL is a snapshot measure, distinct from growth rate or yield, and forms the basis for understanding what a forest contains before any harvesting decision is made.
GSL varies dramatically by forest type, age, management history, and site quality. A young plantation might hold 50 cubic meters per hectare; a mature mixed broadleaf forest might exceed 400. Conifers grown on favorable sites in temperate zones often reach 300 to 500 cubic meters per hectare at rotation age. The measure accounts only for living trees, so dead wood, fallen logs, and stumps are excluded, though some inventory systems track these separately as deadwood volume.
Inventory and regulation
Foresters determine GSL through systematic sampling: fixed-area plots, relascope surveys, or increasingly, airborne lidar. National forest administrations track GSL across regions to enforce sustainable yield limits. In the European Union, GSL data feeds into calculations for Allowable Annual Cut, ensuring harvesting does not exceed long-term growth. Conversely, rising GSL in many temperate forests signals either underutilization or successful recovery from past heavy cutting.
The term appears in forest management plans, timber market reports, and regulatory compliance documents. When a forest owner hears that their GSL is 250 cubic meters per hectare, they know the standing inventory available for sale or for risk mitigation (removing weak or overstocked trees). A declining GSL can signal pest damage, disease, or unsustainable harvest rates; a rising GSL may indicate aging stands or insufficient thinning.
GSL is not the same as stocking density or basal area, though the three correlate. Stocking measures tree count or canopy closure; basal area is cross-sectional area at breast height. GSL directly values the wood volume, making it the metric that matters when timber revenue and carbon storage are in play. Understanding the distinction is critical for anyone translating between forester, ecologist, and mill terminology.
