In metallurgical contexts, a gunner operates the equipment that injects materials or fuel into a furnace under pressure. The role centers on controlling a 'gun', a refractory-lined steel tube mounted on a furnace wall, often an arc furnace or cupola. The gunner positions the gun, sets injection parameters like pressure and duration, and monitors the flow of coke, iron oxide, lime, or other charge materials into the molten bath. This is a skilled position requiring judgment about furnace conditions and material behavior.

The term originates from the analogy of 'firing' material into the furnace much as a cannon fires projectiles. In practice, a gunner works with pneumatic or hydraulic systems delivering pulverized charge at pressures between 3 and 8 bar, depending on furnace type and material. The gun itself must withstand thermal shock and chemical attack from the melt, so it is lined with dense refractory material such as alumina or magnesia brick that requires regular inspection and replacement.

Role and responsibilities

Gunners coordinate closely with furnace operators and charge helpers. They must read furnace temperature, metal level, and composition to decide timing and volume of injection. Injecting too much material at once can cool the bath excessively or create pressure spikes; too little wastes fuel and slows melting. Gunners also manage the nozzle, ensuring it does not become blocked by material buildup or damaged by heat.

Common problems include nozzle blockage from material solidification, pressure fluctuations in the delivery line, and refractory erosion that requires gun relining. A blocked or mis-angled gun forces the furnace operator to stop melting and allows the melt to cool, causing schedule delays and quality issues. Experienced gunners develop intuition for furnace acoustics and visual signs that indicate proper injection.

The gunner position is part of the larger furnace crew structure found in secondary steelmaking shops, iron foundries, and nonferrous metal casting operations. It remains primarily a hands-on, site-based role, though modern furnaces increasingly feature automated injection systems that reduce but do not eliminate the need for manual monitoring and intervention.
