gunnie: the void left when ore gets pulled out
A gunnie is the empty cavity or void space created in a mine after ore has been extracted from a working face or stope. The term emerged in hardrock mining, particularly in metal mining operations, to describe the three-dimensional pocket left behind when miners removed a discrete block or section of mineralized rock. Unlike a pillar, which is rock intentionally left standing for support, a gunnie represents the deliberate product of ore removal.
The word itself is now largely obsolete, having fallen out of regular use by the mid-twentieth century as mining terminology standardized around terms like "stope," "void," and "excavation." Its origins are unclear, though it may derive from dialect or regional mining vocabulary; some sources suggest it was used primarily in certain mining districts or by particular ethnic groups of miners. The definition equating a gunnie to "one yard" (whether linear, cubic, or otherwise) was never precise and reflected the rough, practical measurements common in early mining rather than formal engineering standards.
Why the term mattered
For mine surveyors and planners, tracking gunnies was essential to understanding what remained to be worked, what waste rock had been generated, and where voids existed that could present hazards or require backfill. In metal mines extracting veins or lenses of ore, the irregular shapes of gunnies differed sharply from the orderly "rooms" of coal mining or the systematic terraces of open-pit work, making the terminology valuable in hand-drawn mine plans and verbal reports.
The decline of "gunnie" reflects broader shifts in mining: the rise of technical drawing and standardized measurement units replaced field descriptors; the professionalization of mining engineering introduced formal geometric terms; and the transition from small, labour-intensive hardrock operations to larger mechanized extraction methods reduced the need for such granular local vocabulary.
Today, the term survives mainly in historical mine records, old mining company correspondence, and technical literature from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Anyone reading archival material from metal mines in North America or Britain may encounter it, particularly in reports from operators describing ore removal progress or in disputes over mining claims where the volume of material extracted was in question.
