A head-on collision occurs when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions strike each other front-to-front. In road transport, this happens when vehicles cross the centerline or meet on a single-lane road; at sea, when ships are on intersecting courses; on rail, when trains approach on the same track from opposite directions. The relative velocity of impact is the sum of both vehicles' speeds, making head-on collisions among the most destructive types of impact events.
Head-on collisions carry disproportionate risk because the kinetic energy absorbed at impact is roughly double what occurs in same-direction crashes. A car traveling at 65 km/h that collides head-on with an identical vehicle also at 65 km/h experiences forces equivalent to hitting a stationary object at 130 km/h. This is why regulatory bodies emphasize head-on prevention through road design, signage, and vehicle automation systems.

In road transport, head-on collisions are typically prevented through center line markings, divided highways, rumble strips, and oncoming-traffic warning systems in vehicles. In rail operations, head-on prevention relies on signaling systems, track geometry, and dispatching protocols that ensure trains occupy different sections of track. Maritime head-on prevention uses traffic separation schemes in busy shipping lanes and collision avoidance radar and AIS (Automatic Identification System) to alert vessels of crossing courses.
Logistics and transport operators track head-on collisions separately from other accident types because causation, prevention strategies, and liability determination differ markedly. Insurance underwriters, safety auditors, and accident investigators use the head-on classification to identify systematic failures in traffic control, crew attention, or vehicle maintenance rather than general competence.
The term itself is straightforward: the collision vector is head-on rather than rear-end, broadside, or angular. In crash statistics and regulatory reporting, head-on collisions are flagged as a distinct category because they represent a failure of the primary safety mechanism: keeping vehicles separated in opposite-direction travel.
