Helicopter ear is the rapid thumping or drumming noise that occurs inside a vehicle when one window is lowered while moving. The sound is a direct result of Helmholtz resonance, the same acoustic phenomenon that makes a beer bottle hum when you blow across its opening. As air rushes past the lowered window, it creates pressure oscillations that bounce between the window frame and the vehicle's interior volume, setting up a standing wave that produces a low-frequency tone typically between 10 and 30 Hz.

The effect depends on several variables. Window height matters critically: rolling the window down just a few inches usually triggers it, while fully lowering the window allows air to flow smoothly past without resonating. Vehicle speed is equally important; the effect generally becomes noticeable above 30 mph and worsens as speed increases. The resonant frequency also shifts with the size and shape of the cabin and the position of the lowered window. A rear window produces a different tone than a front window in the same car.

The name comes from the sound itself, which resembles the distinctive thump-thump-thump of a helicopter rotor or a rapid, pulsing helicopter blade passing overhead. It is immediately recognizable to anyone who has experienced it and distinguishes this type of noise from simple wind noise or whistling.

Drivers and passengers eliminate helicopter ear through simple methods: rolling the window down completely instead of partially, opening a second window to break the pressure differential, angling the window frame rather than lowering it straight, or slowing down. Some vehicles are more prone to the effect than others depending on how the window frames and weatherstripping are engineered. Modern vehicles with better sealing and shaped window frames tend to experience it less frequently, but it remains a common complaint in older designs or when windows are manually operated.

The phenomenon is harmless but annoying, generating noise levels that can reach 80 to 90 decibels at highway speeds. It is purely acoustic and causes no mechanical damage to the vehicle.
