A hutch is a rectangular trough or tank used in ore dressing to separate valuable mineral from rock and waste material through a combination of water agitation and gravitational settling. The device exploits differences in specific gravity: heavier ore particles sink while lighter gangue (waste rock) is washed away or floats off. Hutches are fundamental equipment in gravity separation circuits, particularly in metal mining operations where preliminary ore concentration happens before more intensive processing.

The typical hutch consists of a wooden or steel-lined box, roughly 2 to 4 meters long and 1 to 2 meters wide, with sloped bottoms to aid discharge. Ore and water are fed together into the upper end; as the slurry moves through the trough, it undergoes agitation from a reciprocating or rotating mechanism that keeps lighter particles suspended while dense ore settles. The settled heavy fraction is drawn from the bottom; overflow carries the lighter waste to a tailings dam or further treatment. Water consumption is high, making proximity to reliable water supply essential in hutch operation.

Variants and Related Equipment

The hutch family includes the shaking table (which uses tilted, reciprocating motion), the buddle (a circular settling tank with slow rotation), and various jigs that employ pulsing water jets instead of mechanical agitation. Each variant trades off throughput, separation efficiency, and operating cost depending on the ore's density distribution and target mineral size. In tin, copper, and iron ore mining, hutches often form the primary concentration stage before flotation or magnetic separation takes over.

Practical limitations are significant. Fine ore (below 1 mm) does not separate efficiently in hutches because settling time becomes uneconomical; such material typically bypasses to flotation circuits. Slimes (clay-sized particles) coat heavier minerals and slow settling, requiring pre-treatment with flocculants or cyclones. Capacity depends heavily on feed density and ore type: a single hutch might handle 5 to 20 tonnes per hour of ore, but this falls if the ore is sticky or poorly liberated.

The term "hutch" derives from Old French huche, a chest or bin, reflecting its function as a collecting vessel rather than implying any mechanical sophistication. In modern usage it persists mainly in historical or regional mining contexts; larger operations have largely replaced simple hutches with cyclones, spirals, and flotation cells that offer better recovery and automation. However, small-scale and artisanal operations, particularly in alluvial tin and gold recovery, still rely on hutch-like devices for their simplicity and low capital cost.
