An indicator is a flashing light mounted on the front, rear, or side of a vehicle that signals to other road users that the driver intends to turn or change lane. Most vehicles carry four indicators: two amber or white units at the front corners and two red units at the rear corners. The light flashes at a rate between 60 and 120 flashes per minute, depending on jurisdiction and vehicle design. This rhythmic flash makes the signal more noticeable than a steady light and helps distinguish it from brake lights or parking lights.
The electrical circuit of an indicator typically runs through a flasher unit, a thermal or electronic switch that interrupts current flow at regular intervals. When the driver operates the turn stalk on the steering column, it completes the circuit to either the left-side or right-side indicator lamps. Most vehicles also sound a clicking or beeping audible alert from the dashboard to reinforce the signal to the driver. Some modern vehicles add an audible warning if the indicators are manually cancelled before the turn is completed, reducing accidental left-on signals.
Variants and additional functions
Larger vehicles and commercial trucks often use rectangular indicator lamps with higher wattage bulbs (typically 21 watts) to achieve greater visibility at distance. Motorcycles frequently mount smaller indicators, sometimes integrated with sidelights. Vehicles equipped with automatic headlight levelling systems may also have front indicators that swivel horizontally to improve visibility when turning, particularly in European vehicles. Some modern designs incorporate LED indicator clusters that give a sequential sweep effect, though these must still meet legal flash frequency requirements.
Hazard indicators, used to warn of breakdowns or emergencies, flash all four units simultaneously by bypassing the turn stalk and using a dedicated hazard switch. This differs functionally from the directional indicator but uses the same lamps and circuitry. In some territories, indicators must be amber at front and red at rear; in others, white front indicators are permitted. The legal visibility distance for indicators is typically specified at 300 metres in daylight conditions.
Common faults include bulb failure, flasher unit malfunction (causing rapid flashing or no flashing at all), corroded wiring connectors, and faulty turn stalks that stick or return slowly to neutral. Moisture ingress into lamp housings can cause fogging or internal corrosion of the reflective backing. LED indicator retrofits sometimes require electronic flasher replacement to prevent hyper-flashing, which occurs when LED draws less current than incandescent bulbs and tricks the thermal flasher into faster cycling.
