0-60: how fast a car goes from stopped to highway speed

The 0-60 time is the number of seconds an automobile needs to accelerate from a complete stop to 60 miles per hour. It is one of the most common ways to compare the raw acceleration performance of different vehicles, from economy cars to high-performance machines. A typical family sedan achieves this in 8 to 10 seconds; a sports car might do it in 4 to 6 seconds; and exotic performance cars can drop below 3 seconds.

The test itself is straightforward in theory but demands consistency in practice. The vehicle starts from rest on level ground with the engine running, the driver applies full throttle, and a timer or data logger records the moment the speedometer reaches 60 mph. Real-world variation comes from tire grip, weather conditions, transmission type, and driver technique. Automatic transmissions with launch control may outperform manual gearboxes in practice, even if peak power is identical. A worn or improperly inflated tire can add tenths of a second; a cold engine may deliver slightly less power than a warmed one.

The metric originated in the 1950s when 60 mph represented a genuinely significant speed threshold. It still holds value today because it captures the car's behavior in the narrow, easily repeatable range where most drivers actually use full throttle: city traffic merging onto a highway. Unlike top speed or quarter-mile times, which require special conditions, 0-60 can be measured on any straight stretch of empty road.

Modern automotive journalism, manufacturer claims, and online databases all publish 0-60 figures, but these numbers should be read with caution. Official manufacturer times are often optimistic, recorded under ideal conditions with fresh fuel, sticky tires, and perfect ambient temperature. Independent testing by magazines typically yields results 0.3 to 0.5 seconds higher. Variation between individual cars of the same model, even off the same production line, is also normal; engine tolerances, transmission calibration, and drivetrain losses all play small but measurable roles.

The test has real limitations for comparing performance in the real world. A car that reaches 60 mph in 5 seconds but then struggles to accelerate further is not genuinely faster than one that takes 6 seconds but continues to pull hard. Still, 0-60 remains embedded in car culture as the most accessible performance metric, and it is how many buyers and enthusiasts first judge what a car can do.
