An inlead is a pipe, channel, wire, or duct that conveys material, fluid, gas, or electrical current into a container, machine, or system. It serves as the entry point of the supply line. The inlead must be sized and positioned to match the flow rate and pressure of what enters, and it terminates at an inlet or intake port on the receiving vessel or equipment.
In fluid systems, an inlead carries liquid or gas under controlled conditions. A boiler might have multiple inleads: one for water supply, another for fuel oil or gas, and possibly a third for combustion air. Each inlead is fitted with a valve or regulator to govern flow and pressure. The material of the inlead matters; a water inlead in a steam system might be brass or carbon steel with specified wall thickness to handle the working pressure.
In electrical installations, an inlead is the cable or conductor bringing power into a switchboard, motor, or control panel. A three-phase motor inlead might be a four-core armored cable sized to carry the full load current without excessive voltage drop. Inleads are often labeled and color-coded to prevent connection errors.
Inleads fail when they become blocked, corroded, or damaged. A water inlead choked with scale will starve the system of flow. A loose electrical inlead connection generates heat and can cause equipment shutdown or fire. Vibration can fatigue metal inleads, leading to pinhole leaks. Poor routing allows inleads to rub against sharp edges or be crushed by adjacent equipment.
The term appears most in steam, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical work, where the distinction between inlead and outlet matters for troubleshooting and design. Specifying the correct inlead diameter, material, and inlet configuration is essential for system performance and safety.
