instrument: a cockpit gauge that tells pilots what the aircraft is doing
In aviation maintenance, an instrument is a self-contained gauge mounted in the cockpit that displays critical flight data. Unlike a system, which includes sensors, wiring, and processing, an instrument is the display device itself: the dial, needle, digital readout, or needle-and-tape combination that the pilot reads during flight. Common examples include the airspeed indicator, altimeter, attitude indicator, heading indicator, vertical speed indicator, and turn coordinator. Each instrument converts a physical input, air pressure, electrical signal, or gyroscopic motion, into a readable output.
Instruments operate via several sensing methods. Pressure-based instruments like the airspeed indicator and altimeter respond directly to static and dynamic air pressure. Gyroscopic instruments such as the attitude indicator and heading indicator use a spinning rotor maintained at constant angular velocity, with gimbals that allow the rotor to tilt relative to the aircraft. Electrical instruments receive input from magnetometers, accelerometers, or remote electronic sensors and display the result on an analog gauge or a glass cockpit screen.
Maintenance and failure modes
Instrument failure is a serious hazard. Mechanical instruments can jam due to contamination, wear, or corrosion of pivot points. Gyroscopic instruments may fail if the rotor decelerates below minimum spin rate, typically 9,000 to 12,000 rpm depending on the type. Pressure instruments can malfunction if the static or pitot lines become blocked by ice, dirt, or moisture. Electrical instruments depend on stable power, stable grounds, and correct sensor calibration; a shorted instrument can drain an entire bus or corrupt its voltage regulation.
Each instrument is certified to a performance standard and has a defined overhaul interval, typically 3,000 to 5,000 hours for mechanical instruments and longer for modern solid-state versions. Before flight, pilots perform a brief check of instrument readability and reasonableness; in flight, crew cross-check multiple instruments to guard against a single failure masking reality. Maintenance technicians replace failed instruments with components overhauled and certified to original specifications, and must re-verify the aircraft's instrument panel after any major work.
The term instrument in aviation refers strictly to the display, not the entire sensing chain. This distinction matters: a pilot might report that the airspeed indicator is broken, meaning the display is defective, even though the pitot-static system is sound. Maintenance must then troubleshoot whether the failure is in the indicator itself, the pressure line, the diaphragm, or the electrical connection, and replace or repair only what is actually faulty.
