Insulation is a material or system designed to prevent unwanted flow of electrical current between conductors at different voltages, or between a conductor and ground. In practical terms, it is a barrier with extremely high electrical resistance, typically measured in megohms or gigohms per unit thickness. Common insulating materials include rubber, plastics (polyethylene, PVC, cross-linked polyethylene), ceramics, mica, glass fiber, and mineral oil. The choice depends on voltage rating, temperature exposure, mechanical stress, and environment.
In power systems, insulation thickness and material type scale with voltage. A household wire rated 120 volts needs only thin plastic sheathing; a 15 kV distribution line requires much thicker rubber or synthetic sleeves; a 345 kV transmission cable uses multiple layers of oil-impregnated paper or advanced polymers several centimeters thick. Breakdown voltage, the point at which insulation fails and current suddenly flows, is roughly proportional to thickness but also depends critically on material quality, defects, moisture content, and the shape of the electric field around it.
Degradation and failure modes
Insulation ages under heat, electrical stress, moisture, ozone, and mechanical flexing. Polyethylene softens at sustained temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius; paper insulation in transformers degrades when moisture penetrates the oil. Partial discharge, small arcing within voids or cracks in the insulation, gradually etches away material until complete failure occurs. Testing for insulation integrity uses megohm meters (hi-pot testers) to measure resistance, or tan delta analysis to detect internal degradation before catastrophic breakdown.
In cables and equipment, insulation failure creates both safety and operational hazards: ground faults that trip protective relays, fire risk from arcing, and personnel shock hazard. Maintenance involves keeping insulation dry, cool, and mechanically sound. Moisture ingress is the single largest cause of premature failure in buried cables, submerged transformers, and outdoor equipment; desiccant breathers and regular drying cycles are standard protective measures.
The term reflects the material's defining property: it isolates electrical energy, holding charge or voltage in place without continuous external power input. This is why the formal definition emphasizes maintaining an electrical field with minimal energy loss, distinguishing true insulators from conductors (which dissipate energy as heat) and from semiconductors or resistors (which conduct weakly).
