Intaglio is a family of printing processes where the image sits below the surface of the printing plate. The non-image areas are wiped clean; only the recessed areas hold ink, which is then transferred under pressure to paper. This inverts the logic of relief printing, where raised surfaces carry ink. The term comes from the Italian word meaning to engrave or cut in.

The main commercial intaglio processes are gravure (rotogravure for high-speed runs), etching, and engraving. In gravure, thousands of tiny cells are etched or laser-cut into a copper or chrome cylinder; the cylinder rotates through an ink bath, a squeegee blade wipes the surface, and paper pressed against it picks up ink from the cells. Gravure dominates long-run packaging and publication printing because the process can achieve consistent tone gradations and handle variable ink viscosity well. Etching uses acid to bite lines into copper or steel plates; engraving uses burins or rotary tools to cut lines mechanically.

The depth and width of recesses control ink volume and therefore image tone. Deeper cells hold more ink and print darker. This gives intaglio its hallmark: rich, saturated color and fine detail. A press must apply 500 to 1500 pounds per linear inch of pressure to force the paper into recesses and transfer ink. Specialty papers with slight dampness improve ink pickup by softening the surface slightly and helping the paper conform to the cell geometry.

Where it fits in modern printing

Intaglio has largely ceded ground to offset and digital printing for general commercial work, but it remains dominant in specific niches: flexible packaging, wallpaper, security printing (banknotes and stamps), and high-end art reproduction. The process excels with metallics, fluorescents, and specialty inks because the recessed cell naturally meters and controls ink application. Gravure cylinders are expensive and slow to produce, so volumes below 100,000 copies rarely justify the tooling cost.

A common problem in intaglio is ink starvation, where the blade skips or chatters and leaves some cells partially empty, producing uneven tone. Another is the buildup of dried ink at the blade edge, which must be scraped away periodically. Because the blade wears and the cylinder surface can be damaged by hard particles, quality control requires frequent microscopic inspection of cylinder condition and regular blade maintenance.
