An interchange is a physical location where a passenger can transfer directly from one train service to another, or between rail and another transport mode such as bus, tram, or coach. At its most basic, it means a station designed and operated to make these transitions as seamless as possible, with coordinated timetables, clear signage, and minimal walking distance between platforms or stops.
Interchanges vary enormously in scale and complexity. A simple interchange might be two railway lines sharing a single station with parallel platforms; the passenger walks across a bridge or through an underpass and boards the next service. Major interchanges in cities like London, Paris, or Berlin involve multiple rail operators, underground systems, bus terminals, and coach stations all located within the same facility or connected underground, requiring integrated ticketing, synchronized schedules, and dedicated interchange staff.
Design and operational challenges
The critical measure of an interchange's success is dwell time: the time a passenger must wait between services. Well-designed interchanges in network-dense areas aim to keep this to 5-15 minutes for most connections. This requires careful timetabling so that services arrive and depart in coordination. Poor interchange planning leaves passengers with either dangerously short connections (risking missed trains) or lengthy waits that encourage them to use competing services.
Physical layout matters as much as timetabling. Walking distances between platforms, the presence of shelter and seating, toilet facilities, and real-time information displays all affect whether passengers experience an interchange as functional or frustrating. Some major interchanges employ dedicated staff to manage the flow and assist with navigation, particularly where multiple private operators run services from the same location.
The term reflects the railway industry's shift toward network thinking rather than single-line operation. Where 19th-century railways were often isolated routes, modern rail systems explicitly design interchanges as nodes in a network. This is particularly critical in continental Europe and East Asia, where intermodal networks integrate rail with buses, trams, and local transport. Ticketing and journey planning systems now treat the interchange as a functional unit, bundling rail and connecting services into single fares.
