A shunter is a small locomotive designed to move individual railway cars or short trains between sidings, loading areas, and storage tracks within a rail yard or industrial facility. Unlike main-line locomotives built for sustained high-speed running, shunters prioritize low-speed power, tight turning radius, and frequent stopping and starting. They are the heavy haulers of yard work, capable of pushing or pulling loaded wagons at speeds rarely exceeding 20 km/h.
Shunters come in two basic mechanical types: diesel-hydraulic and diesel-electric. Diesel-hydraulic shunters, common in European yards, use a fluid coupling and gearbox to transmit power directly from a small diesel engine. Diesel-electric shunters contain an onboard generator that powers electric traction motors, offering smoother acceleration and better control in confined spaces. Both types are typically much shorter and lighter than road locomotives, often weighing 30 to 50 tonnes, and feature cab designs that provide 360-degree visibility for yard operators.
Shunters spend their entire working life performing repetitive impacts and jerking movements: coupling to standing cars, dragging heavy wagons through switches at low speed, backing up with precision in tight yards. The coupling and uncoupling cycle, performed many times per shift, subjects frames and bogies to considerable stress. Drawbars and coupling gear wear rapidly. Many yards operate shunters in three shifts to keep yards moving, and maintenance intervals are frequent and labour-intensive.
The term shunter derives directly from the verb to shunt, meaning to move a railway vehicle from one track to another, originally by hand or animal power before mechanical rail transport. In North American usage, the same machine is often called a yard engine, yard locomotive, or switcher, though switcher more commonly refers to the person operating the locomotive. British and European railways standardised on shunter as the equipment term and shunting as the operation.
Modern shunters must navigate switches (points) with precision and operate in all weather conditions. Many are now equipped with radio remote controls, allowing an operator to stand clear of the locomotive and direct movements visually. Older shunters relied entirely on hand signals or ground crew guidance. The job remains physically demanding for both machine and operator, making shunter one of the most heavily used and carefully maintained pieces of rail infrastructure in any industrial yard.
