interjoist: the gap between floor or ceiling beams
An interjoist is the open space between two parallel joists, those horizontal structural members that carry floor or ceiling loads. In a typical residential floor frame, joists are spaced 16 inches or 24 inches on center, leaving an interjoist cavity of roughly 14 or 22 inches clear width. This space is where plumbing runs, electrical conduit, HVAC ducts, and insulation are installed.
The depth of the interjoist cavity is fixed by the joist depth itself, typically 2 inches (actual, after milling) for shallow construction or 10 to 12 inches for deeper framing. This vertical dimension limits what can fit: a 1.5-inch PVC drain line requires different planning than a 4-inch ductwork, and dense-pack cellulose insulation fills the cavity differently than a fiberglass batts. Framers and trades must coordinate what goes where before walls close, because once drywall is hung, the interjoist passages are sealed off.
Cross-bridging and solid blocking are sometimes installed between joists to stiffen the floor and prevent joists from twisting, which also subdivides the interjoist space vertically. This blocking becomes an obstacle for running long runs of mechanical systems, forcing routes to climb, drop, or detour around it. In engineered floor systems with I-joists or open-web trusses, the interjoist cavity may feature knockouts or pre-drilled holes specifically designed for conduit and pipe passage.
The term also appears in plumbing and electrical work as a neutral descriptor for the work surface where rough-in trades operate. A plumber rough-in might include multiple runs through the same interjoist space, stapled to the rim board or snaked along the joist bottom. In retrofit work, working blind in an interjoist cavity above a finished ceiling is always a challenge: visibility is poor, reach is awkward, and existing systems may occupy the space you assumed was free.
