A jack is a compact mechanical device that converts small manual effort into large lifting force, allowing one person to raise loads that would otherwise require multiple workers or fixed equipment. The most common industrial jacks operate through a screw mechanism, hydraulic fluid pressure, or lever action, each suited to different load weights and lift heights.

The scissor jack, familiar from automotive work, uses a diamond-shaped linkage that compresses when a central screw turns, spreading the top and bottom plates apart vertically. Hydraulic bottle jacks contain a single piston inside a sealed cylinder; turning the handle opens a valve that admits oil under pressure, forcing the piston upward. Pneumatic jacks use compressed air instead of manual pumping, making them faster for repetitive work in factories. Each type trades off lift speed for force: a hydraulic jack lifts slowly but can support 10 to 50 tons, while a pneumatic jack moves quickly but handles lighter loads.

Where jacks fail and what that means

The most dangerous failure is load creep, where a hydraulic jack slowly leaks internal oil and the load sinks back down. This happens when the internal piston seals wear and the load is left unsupported on the jack alone. Industry practice requires placing solid blocking, shims, or jack stands beneath any load before work begins; the jack is a positioning tool, not a support. Screw jacks jam when dirt accumulates on the threads or when the load tilts, putting eccentric pressure on the central screw.

Jacks appear in machine shops, automotive bays, maintenance teams, and construction sites wherever loads between 500 pounds and 50 tons need to be raised a few inches or feet. They are portable enough to fit in a van but precise enough to align heavy equipment for assembly. The term jack derives from an older mechanical jack called a screw jack, which in turn comes from the Middle English and Medieval Latin names for a simple lifting tool, though the word's deeper origin is uncertain.

Capacity is stamped on the ram or base plate and must never be exceeded; overloading can burst the seals internally or bend the frame, creating a sudden drop. A quality hydraulic jack will hold its lift indefinitely if the load is small relative to capacity, but most facilities reserve jacks for temporary positioning and use dedicated stands for sustained support.
