In electric vehicle manufacturing, a skateboard is the complete integrated platform that sits beneath the passenger cabin and cargo area. It contains the battery pack (typically 40 to 100+ kWh), electric motors (one per wheel or clustered), suspension, steering mechanics, and high-voltage distribution systems all mounted as a single structural unit. The name comes from its visual resemblance to a skateboard deck when viewed from the side: flat, elongated, and with wheels at the extremes.

The skateboard architecture emerged as manufacturers moved away from adapting existing internal-combustion vehicle platforms. Instead of designing a car first and fitting batteries into leftover engine compartments, engineers build the skateboard as the foundational layer. This allows a single skateboard design to accept multiple body styles: sedan, SUV, wagon, or commercial van. Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Tesla have each developed proprietary skateboard platforms, though the underlying principle remains constant.

Structural and thermal demands

The skateboard must handle extreme stresses. Battery cells generate heat during charging and discharge; the skateboard includes cooling channels, often circulating glycol-water mixture. The structural frame typically uses cast aluminum or steel subframes bonded to a large-format battery enclosure. This enclosure must be rigid enough to support the vehicle's weight and crash loads while remaining sealed against water ingress. Typical ground clearance sits between 160 and 200 millimeters, so aerodynamic underbody paneling is critical for range efficiency.

Assembly happens in stages: battery cells are first packaged into modules, modules into packs, and packs into the skateboard chassis. Motors are mounted before or after battery integration depending on factory workflow. Quality control focuses on electrical continuity, insulation resistance, and mechanical fastener torque, since any single failure can disable the entire vehicle or create fire risk.

The skateboard platform reduces time-to-market for new models because engineers can develop a single running gear and sell it to multiple brand divisions or external manufacturers. This modularity has become central to EV strategy in a way that conventional underbodies never were. However, it also locks manufacturers into early thermal and electrical choices that become difficult to change mid-platform.
