The name reflects the tool's function: it gives rescuers mechanical jaws strong enough to bite through metal and, metaphorically, to free people from metal prisons. The brand Hurst Extrication Tools (now owned by Holmatro) became synonymous with the category for decades, though multiple manufacturers now produce comparable equipment to different specifications and pressure ratings.
Proper use requires trained operators because incorrect positioning can crush remaining parts of the vehicle or trap the patient further. Pump operators must monitor hydraulic fluid temperature; extended use without cooling periods risks seal degradation.
