jump: a sudden offset in rock layers
In mining and extraction, a jump is a vertical or near-vertical displacement of rock strata, caused by faulting or subsidence. Where two adjacent rock layers should align horizontally across a given vertical plane, a jump creates a step or offset, with one side of the stratum displaced upward or downward relative to the other. This discontinuity can range from centimetres to metres in magnitude and presents both mapping and extraction challenges.
Jumps occur primarily through two mechanisms: tectonic faulting, where stress in the Earth's crust causes brittle fracture and displacement of blocks on either side of the fault plane, and subsidence, where overlying strata settle unevenly due to compaction, groundwater withdrawal, or mining activity below. In coal mining, jumps can occur in the coal seam itself or in the strata immediately above and below it. In metalliferous mining, a jump in an ore-bearing horizon may mean the orebody thins, splits, or disappears along the fault, requiring rerouting of drives or abandonment of a working section.
Recognition and impact
Miners and geological staff detect jumps through systematic borehole logging, core examination, and face mapping. The offset is typically recorded as a throw, the vertical component of displacement measured perpendicular to the fault plane. A jump of 2 to 5 metres is common in fault-affected coalfields; larger jumps may render a seam uneconomical to mine across. The angle of the fault plane affects extraction difficulty: steep faults may allow mining to continue with ramp access, while shallow jumps can force complete abandonment of a section.
The term reflects practical mining speech: strata have jumped relative to their expected position. Miners also use related terms such as heave (horizontal displacement) and throw (vertical displacement) to quantify the offset more precisely. Understanding the distribution and magnitude of jumps is fundamental to mine planning, ventilation routing, and roof support design.
