A straddle is a heavy wooden or steel framework positioned vertically in a mine shaft to support the weight of overlying rock and the set, the primary structural assembly of timbers or steel beams that frames the shaft opening. The straddle sits directly beneath the set and transfers loads down through the shaft wall to lower levels or solid ground. In traditional hard-rock mining, straddles are essential structural members because they must bear both the dead weight of the set itself and the dynamic loads from hoisting operations, ventilation ducting, and the movement of personnel and materials.
Straddles vary in construction depending on shaft depth, rock quality, and the span they must bridge. In shallow shafts or soft ground, carpenters assemble straddles from squared timber beams, typically spruce or pine, with cross-bracing and blocking to resist lateral movement. In deeper shafts or where rock competency is poor, steel structural members replace or supplement timber. A typical shaft straddle might consist of two main beams set perpendicular to the shaft direction, with secondary timbers or steel angles bolted or welded to form a rigid box-like structure that fits snugly against the shaft collar or rock walls.
The straddle must be installed level and square, because any misalignment concentrates stress and creates cracking or crushing in the set timbers above it. Settlement of the straddle or subsidence of the ground beneath it can trigger a cascade of failures up the shaft. In very deep or geologically unstable shafts, multiple straddles are installed at intervals, each one supporting its own set, to distribute loads and limit the unsupported span of any single timber assembly. The spacing and sizing of straddles is calculated during shaft design based on rock strength, water conditions, and anticipated loads.
The term straddle comes from the verb meaning to stand over or across something: the straddle literally straddles the shaft by spanning from wall to wall, standing astride the opening to catch and hold the set above. The word is also used in other mining contexts to describe any support structure that spans across an opening or gap.
In modern mines with concrete or steel-lined shafts, the role of the traditional timber straddle has diminished, but the term persists in mining engineering terminology and in the maintenance of older underground operations. Understanding the straddle is important for anyone involved in shaft inspection, repair, or historical mining site documentation, because failure or deterioration of a straddle is a serious structural hazard that can compromise the entire shaft assembly above it.
