KD: flat-packed parts ready for assembly
A KD is a product shipped as a collection of disassembled components rather than as a finished unit. The parts arrive flat or nested, reducing volume and freight cost, and the end user or retailer handles final assembly. KD is standard across furniture, cabinetry, shelving, and some machinery where the assembled size exceeds practical shipping dimensions.
The economics are straightforward: a fully assembled cabinet might occupy 3 to 4 cubic meters; the same cabinet shipped KD occupies 0.8 to 1.2 cubic meters. For retailers managing warehouse space and for mail-order operations, this density matters. Labor cost to assemble is passed downstream, either to the retailer's assembly team or to the customer. Shipping weight typically drops 10 to 20 percent as well, since air is removed from the stack.
Assembly fitness and documentation
Not every product suits KD treatment. Parts requiring precision fitting, alignment jigs, or specialized tooling during manufacture become problematic if assembly happens remotely. Conversely, products with simple joinery, modular design, or bolt-together construction are ideal KD candidates. The quality risk sits in assembly: missing fasteners, damaged components on arrival, or poor instruction documentation create returns and complaints. Reputable KD suppliers include detailed illustrated guides, hardware kits bagged separately, and often pre-drilled or pre-slotted holes to guide assembly.
Hardware quality is a common failure point. Screws, dowels, cam locks, and connectors must be robust enough to survive packaging and handling, yet easy enough for non-specialists to install correctly. Undersized or corroded fasteners are false economy. Many KD products include redundant fastener quantities (typically 10 to 15 percent overage) to offset loss or damage.
In manufacturing, KD production demands clean separation of assembly steps. Final finishing, hinge installation, or cable routing must happen before disassembly, or those tasks shift to the end customer, which rarely ends well. This changes factory workflow and quality control procedures. Some products use hybrid approaches: KD for transport, but partial pre-assembly at the retail point to speed final installation and reduce failure rates.
