Kitting is the practice of grouping individual components or products into a single saleable unit, typically before they reach the end user. Instead of selling a motor, coupling, and mounting bracket separately, a manufacturer might kit them together as a complete assembly. This reduces the customer's sourcing burden and often commands a higher total margin than selling the parts individually.
In manufacturing and distribution, kitting serves multiple functions. It can reduce downstream assembly time at the customer's facility, lower their procurement costs by consolidating supplier relationships, and create a branded or engineered solution where none existed as a standard offering. A semiconductor test equipment maker, for example, might kit together probe cards, interface cables, and software licenses as a turnkey system rather than leaving integration to the customer. Kitting also allows manufacturers to move slow-moving inventory when paired with faster sellers.
Execution and Economics
Kitting requires dedicated picking and packing labor or automated systems to segregate and bundle components according to a bill of materials. The labor cost per unit is typically highest for low-volume, high-mix kits. Some manufacturers use postponement strategies, holding components separately until an order arrives and then kitting on demand to avoid overproduction of specific combinations. The alternative, pre-kitting standard combinations, ties up working capital and risks obsolescence if demand shifts.
Pricing a kit involves deciding whether to discount the bundle versus the sum of individual prices, and how aggressively to position it. A kit priced at the full combined list price may not drive adoption; one priced below that sum sacrifices per-unit revenue but can expand market share and reduce customer acquisition friction. The real leverage in kitting usually comes from reducing the customer's total cost of ownership, not from inflating the headline price.
Kitting is distinct from contract assembly or configuration-to-order, where components are integrated into a functional end product. A kit typically remains at the component or subassembly level; the customer or an integrator performs final assembly. This distinction matters for regulatory compliance, warranty, and liability, since the kit supplier may not be responsible for how the parts are ultimately used together.
