Overshot is a weaving structure built on a plain weave ground with supplemental weft threads that float across groups of warps to create pattern and texture. The floats sit on top of the ground weave and typically cover areas of 2 to 8 warps at a time, producing a raised, dimensional design on the finished cloth. The structure is strong because the ground weave remains intact underneath, so the cloth does not shred if a float snags or breaks.

The term comes from the way the supplemental weft is threaded: it is "shot over" multiple warps in sequence, skipping the interlacement at specific points determined by the loom's tie-up. This is different from brocade or damask, where pattern comes from varying the base weave itself. Overshot relies on two separate weft threads working together on the same shed: the ground weft binds every warp, while the pattern weft floats selectively.

Overshot became most visible in American colonial coverlets, blankets, and table linens from the 18th and early 19th centuries, where it allowed weavers to produce striking geometric and representational designs without the cost of a jacquard loom or the skill required for complex hand-tied techniques. The structure is also found in European folk weaving traditions, particularly in the Balkans and Scandinavia. Wool and linen were the common fibers, with wool pattern wefts floating over linen ground for contrast and durability.

The quality of overshot cloth depends on the fineness of the ground weave and the consistency of float tension. Loose floats catch and pull; too-tight floats pucker the ground. The depth of the pattern is controlled by how many times the pattern weft repeats in each pass. Most overshot coverlets were woven on four-harness or eight-harness looms with hand-operated treadles, meaning the patterning was relatively simple compared to multi-harness structures but still required careful tie-up and consistent weaving rhythm.

Overshot appears in modern handweaving and textile education as a foundational technique for understanding supplemental weft structures. It demonstrates how pattern and ground can be built independently, a principle that extends to more complex threadings such as summer-and-winter or crackle weave. Overshot cloth also shows how durability can be achieved while maintaining visual impact, since the float adds texture without compromising the structural integrity of the weave.
