knockout: when ink erases what's underneath
In process color printing, a knockout is a deliberate gap in one or more color separations that prevents those inks from printing in a specific area. Where the knockout occurs, the substrate (paper or film) shows through, or only selected inks print on top of it. This technique solves a fundamental problem: when wet inks sit on top of each other, they mix, trap unevenly, or create mud where colors should stay crisp and distinct.
A typical application is a dark foreground element overprinting a lighter background. Without knockout, the background color would print through the darker ink, dulling it and causing registration problems. The pressman or prepress operator creates a knockout by removing that background color from its separation before plating. The result is a clean edge where the foreground color sits directly on bare substrate, with no color interference underneath.
Knockout versus overprint
The opposite approach is overprint, where inks print on top of each other as designed. Overprint is necessary for some effects (like how magenta and yellow make red) but risky for others. A knockout demands precise register between plates; any shift means a visible white sliver or unwanted color fringe appears. Overprint is more forgiving of minor misalignment but produces different hues due to ink interaction and can show the color beneath.
The term reflects its function: the foreground color knocks out the background, erasing it from that area. On smaller presses or with fewer colors, knockouts are simpler to execute. On multicolor or flexographic equipment, they require careful separation work and press coordination. Modern digital prepress software automates much of this, but understanding the mechanical and optical consequences remains essential for achieving the intended result on press.
