knockstone: anvil for breaking ore by hand
A knockstone is a heavy, flat-topped block of stone or cast iron set at a convenient working height, typically 0.8 to 1.2 metres above ground, on which miners and ore processors break raw ore into smaller, more manageable pieces using hammers or pickaroons. It serves as a stationary anvil in the early stages of ore beneficiation, before material moves to mills or other mechanical crushing equipment.
The knockstone itself must be made from hard, dense material that resists fracture under repeated impact. Stone knockstones were traditionally cut from granite, basalt, or other igneous rock with sufficient toughness to withstand thousands of hammer blows without significant wear or spalling. Industrial operations later switched to cast iron blocks, which offered better uniformity and could be replaced more economically once worn through.
The working surface of a knockstone typically measures between 0.5 and 1 metre across. Ore is placed on the surface and struck with a 2 to 4 kilogramme hammer or a pointed pick-like tool called a pickaroon, which breaks it along grain lines and natural fractures. Workers aim to reduce ore to pieces 5 to 15 centimetres across, depending on the downstream process. Finer hand-breaking may occur at secondary knockstones.
Why knockstones matter
Hand-breaking at the knockstone removed waste rock, clay, and weathered material before ore reached expensive mechanical crushers, improving the economics of small and medium-scale operations. In hard-rock mines (copper, tin, lead, gold), this sorting and preliminary size reduction lowered milling costs and recovered ore that might otherwise be lost in coarser grinding. The practice was standard across European and colonial mines through the 19th and into the 20th century.
The term comes directly from the action: ore was knocked, or struck, upon the stone. Knockstones appear in mining records and equipment lists from the 16th century onward. They were often positioned near mine shafts or at the mouth of underground workings, and the work was frequently assigned to women and children in commercial operations, as it required strength but not specialised skill. Modern automated crushers have displaced hand knockstones in most industrial contexts, though the tool survives in small-scale and artisanal mining in developing regions.
