A test designed to measure the durability of a fabric.

Martindale method: abrasion durability test for textiles

The Martindale method is a laboratory abrasion test that simulates wear on fabric by rubbing it repeatedly against a standard abradant under controlled pressure. A sample of fabric, typically 38 mm square, is mounted on a platform and subjected to a rubbing action from a wool felt covered head. The test apparatus moves in a complex figure-eight pattern, which ensures that the abrasion occurs across the fabric surface in multiple directions rather than a single line of wear. The test counts the number of cycles required before the fabric shows visible damage, such as pilling, thinning, or breakage of fibers.

Standard conditions are defined by ISO 12947. The load applied during testing is usually 9 kPa (roughly 1 kilogram per 10 square centimeters), and the abradant is traditionally wool felt, though synthetic alternatives are sometimes used. The test runs until the fabric fails visibly or reaches a defined maximum cycle count, usually 100,000 cycles. Results are expressed as the number of cycles to a defined failure criterion: for instance, a rated fabric might withstand 30,000 cycles before forming visible pilling.

The Martindale test is particularly valuable for upholstery fabrics, curtains, workwear, and other textiles intended for frequent handling or contact. A sofa fabric rated at 15,000 Martindale cycles is expected to perform acceptably in a domestic setting; commercial grade textiles often require 30,000 or higher. The figure-eight motion distinguishes this test from simpler linear rubbing methods, because real-world wear rarely attacks fabric from a single direction.

The method is named after its developer, though the specific attribution is historical rather than contemporary. It has been the reference standard in Europe and increasingly worldwide since the 1960s, codified by ISO and used by textile producers, upholstery manufacturers, and quality assurance departments to substantiate durability claims. Results from this test are printed on fabric specification sheets and used to guide fiber selection, yarn construction, and finishing processes.

Common failure modes in Martindale testing include fiber breakage (especially in brittle synthetic fibers or low-twist yarns), pilling (where fibers roll into balls on the surface), and loss of strength sufficient to tear under the applied load. High-count, tightly woven fabrics and those with strong, ductile fibers typically achieve higher cycle counts. Flocked fabrics and pile textiles present particular challenges because the three-dimensional structure allows fibers to move and tangle under repeated rubbing.
