In video production and broadcast work, layback is the process of recording finished audio, typically a stereo or surround mix, back onto the master videotape or file after picture editing is complete. The audio mix, prepared separately in a sound studio, is synchronized with the locked picture and recorded into the audio tracks of the master. This differs from recording audio during shooting: layback ensures clean, precisely timed dialogue, music, and effects aligned to exact video frames.
The mechanical or digital alignment required for layback demands frame-accurate synchronization. In tape-based workflows, this meant cueing both the audio master and video master to identical timecode references, then starting playback simultaneously. Modern systems use timecode as a common clock: the audio device reads timecode from the video master and locks to it, or external hardware synchronizes both machines. File-based workflows simplify this by embedding audio in video containers or using shared timecode metadata.
Technical setup and variants
A basic layback chain includes a video master (tape or file), an audio playback device (deck, workstation, or software), and monitoring. The audio input is routed to the appropriate tracks on the video master, typically AES/EBU digital, analog balanced XLR, or embedded in an SDI or fiber connection. Channels are assigned: stereo pairs to left and right, or discrete tracks for surround mixing. Logging and verification matter: operators confirm timecode alignment, check levels (typically peaking at -6 dB to -3 dB below clipping), and perform test runs before committing the final record.
Layback became standard terminology in broadcast and post-production during the transition from film to videotape, when picture and sound were edited separately. The term reflects the direction of information flow: audio is laid back onto the video master after all picture work is locked. In modern digital workflows, this step is sometimes compressed or combined with final file export, but the principle of synchronizing a finished mix to a locked picture remains the same.
Problems in layback usually stem from timecode sync loss, level mismatches, or audio degradation during the digital transfer. Timecode discontinuities can cause audio to slip frames or drop out. Analog layback risks level clipping or noise floor elevation. Digital audio requires clean signal paths to avoid artifacts. Operators must verify the recorded result by spotting it against the picture before the master leaves the facility.
