A levelling staff, also called a levelling rod or measuring staff, is a straight pole typically 3 to 5 metres long, marked with graduations that allow a surveyor to read vertical distances. It stands upright on the ground at survey points, and a surveyor looking through a level (an optical instrument) reads the staff to determine the height difference between two locations. The staff is the physical link between the ground and the optical measurement; without it, the level cannot function.
Staffs come in two main types: rigid aluminium poles with permanent markings, and folding or telescoping staffs for transport. The graduations are typically marked in centimetre intervals, with alternate sections painted in contrasting colours, usually black and white or red and white, to aid readability at distance. Some staffs use a target: a movable sliding marker that the surveyor adjusts until the cross-hair of the level bisects it, then reads the staff directly. Others employ a graduated scale with lines that the surveyor aligns to the cross-hair without any moving target.
Precision matters greatly. A standard staff graduated to 1 centimetre divisions can be read reliably to the nearest 5 millimetres when viewed through a modern level at typical surveying distances of 30 to 40 metres. Invar staffs, made from a nickel-iron alloy with extremely low thermal expansion, are used for high-precision levelling over long distances or in unstable temperature conditions, because ordinary metal staffs can expand or contract and introduce error.
The staff must be held truly vertical. Even small tilts compound over multiple setups. Most staffs have a small spirit level bubble built into their side, and the leveller must check this constantly. Soft ground, wind, and observer fatigue are common sources of error. The staff must also sit on a stable point: a peg driven into the earth, a benchmark, or a levelling board placed on solid ground. Measuring on grass or soft terrain introduces uncertainty.
The name reflects the tool's original purpose: to establish level surfaces or to measure 'levels' (differences in height) for construction, drainage, and mapping. In modern practice, levelling is one of the oldest and most reliable methods for determining accurate elevation data. Though GPS and lasers now exist, the levelling staff and level remain standard in civil works because they are accurate, simple, require no power, and function independently of atmospheric conditions or satellite availability.
