Chainwork is the practice of measuring distances on the ground using a surveying chain, historically the primary method for establishing linear dimensions in field surveys before electronic distance measurement became standard. A surveying chain, typically 66 feet long (one chain, or 20.1168 metres), was laid end-to-end across the terrain to determine distances between survey points, with the accumulated length recorded in chains and links.
The standard surveyor's chain, also called Gunter's chain after its 17th-century originator, consisted of 100 links of wrought iron or steel, each link measuring 7.92 inches. Two surveyors, known as the head chainman and rear chainman, would stretch the chain taut between marked points, with the head chainman advancing and the rear chainman recording the number of chains laid. Intermediate measurements used shorter rods or tapes, and angles were typically determined with a compass or theodolite rather than during chainwork itself.
Field conditions and errors
Chainwork performance depended heavily on ground conditions and operator skill. Uneven terrain introduced systematic errors, as the chain sagged in valleys and climbed slopes; surveyors compensated by working in shorter segments or applying corrections based on measured slope angles. Temperature affected chain length slightly, and older chains stretched with use. Consistency required frequent comparisons against a standard, and experienced surveyors developed techniques to apply tension uniformly and read the chain position accurately at fractional-link intervals.
The method had inherent limitations. Chains caught on vegetation and rocks, required two people to operate effectively, and produced cumulative positional error over long distances. Despite these drawbacks, chainwork remained economical and sufficiently accurate for property boundary surveys, road layouts, and small engineering projects well into the 20th century. Many cadastral records and deed surveys depend on chainwork measurements, making the method historically significant in land registration.
By the 1970s, electronic distance measurement equipment and later GPS surveying displaced chainwork almost entirely in professional practice. The term survives mainly in historical contexts and in the occasional reference to traditional boundary surveys where 'chain and compass' methods established property lines still in use today.
