In aircraft maintenance, to life a component means to remove it from service and replace it with a new or overhauled unit once it reaches the end of its certified operational life. This is not a repair or a fix; it is a scheduled replacement driven by engineering limits, not by failure. An engine with 5000 hours of life remaining must come out at 5000 hours, even if it runs perfectly.

Every rotating assembly, structural element, and critical system on an aircraft carries a life limit expressed in flight hours, calendar days, or flight cycles. These limits come from the manufacturer and are published in maintenance manuals and component overhaul manuals. For jet engines, life limits typically range from 3000 to 20000 hours depending on engine type and design. Compressor blades, turbine discs, and bearings are all tracked individually. A landing gear assembly might be good for 500 cycles. Fuselage frames have calendar limits: some require replacement after 20 years regardless of hours flown.

The tracking system is strict. Maintenance logs and component serial number records show accumulated hours and cycles for every lifed part. When a part approaches its limit, the maintenance planner schedules its removal before it reaches the hard stop. Remove it one hour early and you are compliant; fly it one hour past its limit and you have broken the airworthiness directive. Airlines track this in their maintenance management systems with weeks of buffer.

Why life limits exist

Life limits are set through testing, failure analysis, and service history. A turbine blade might be tested for 15000 hours in a rig with thermocouples, then the manufacturer applies a safety factor, then service data from the fleet is fed back into the model. The limit reflects the point at which metallurgical fatigue, creep, or crack initiation becomes statistically probable. Exceed it and you trade certainty for risk.

Lifing a part is expensive because the part is discarded or sent for overhaul, and labor must remove it and install its replacement. But it is also predictable: you know when you will have this cost, and it keeps the aircraft in the air. An unscheduled removal due to failure can ground an aircraft and trigger a cascade of cancellations. That is why life limits are non-negotiable in commercial aviation.
