linoblock: carved linoleum for relief printing

A linoblock is a sheet of linoleum mounted on a wooden or plywood backing, carved in relief to create a printing surface. The artist or technician removes material from the block's surface, leaving raised areas that receive ink and transfer an image to paper or fabric. The linoleum itself is a composite of linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, and resins pressed onto a burlap or canvas base, typically 3 to 6 millimeters thick. The wooden backing provides rigidity and a surface for mounting on a printing press or hand-printing setup.

Linoblock printing belongs to the relief printing family, alongside woodcut and metal relief plates. Unlike wood, linoleum is uniform in density and grain, making it more forgiving to cut; it resists splintering and allows finer detail work. The material responds consistently to carving tools, whether V-gouges, U-gouges, or specialized burins. Blocks come pre-mounted on wood or unmounted as raw sheets, depending on the job. Industrial production uses them for textile printing, decorative papers, and short-run jobbing work where a metal plate would be overkill.

The carving process determines the final image. Cutaways become white (or unprinted areas); raised surfaces hold ink. Heat can soften linoleum slightly, making cuts easier, though industrial blocks are usually worked cold. After carving, the block is inked using a roller or by hand with a brush, then pressed against the substrate under moderate pressure. Registration marks cut into the block itself help align multiple passes on the same sheet, essential for multi-color work or large production runs.

Linoleum wears with use. The edges of fine cuts can compress or flake after thousands of impressions, gradually degrading sharpness. Blocks are stored flat, protected from excessive heat and humidity that can warp the wood backing. A well-maintained block can yield 5,000 to 10,000 usable prints before significant wear becomes visible, depending on cut depth and pressure applied.

The term linoleum itself derives from the linseed oil base; block printing on linoleum became industrially viable only after linoleum was invented in the 1860s as a flooring material. Printers quickly adopted it for its economy and workability, and it remains standard in educational settings, small presses, and craft-oriented commercial shops where design flexibility and low tooling cost outweigh the speed advantages of photopolymer or metal plates.
