A lugnut is a fastened nut, typically hexagonal or occasionally spherical, that secures a wheel to a vehicle's hub. It threads onto a studs, which are fixed bolts protruding from the hub flange, and when tightened holds the wheel assembly firmly in place against axial and radial movement. Most passenger vehicles use between four and ten lugnuts per wheel, depending on the vehicle class and hub design.
Lugnuts come in two primary styles: open-ended nuts, which are simple hexagonal fasteners that require a socket and ratchet wrench, and acorn (or domed) lugnuts, which have a rounded or conical top and are often chrome-plated for appearance on visible wheels. Acorn nuts sit flush against the wheel and are standard on many passenger cars. Open-ended variants are common on trucks and commercial vehicles where appearance matters less than ease of access and removal. Some designs incorporate a nylon or plastic insert or cone seat that seats against a matching taper on the stud, which reduces vibration and loosening.
The critical property of a lugnut is its tightness specification, measured in foot-pounds of torque. Under-torqued lugnuts can loosen and allow wheel separation, a dangerous failure. Over-torqued lugnuts strip threads on the studs, deform the nut itself, and make removal difficult or impossible without breaking studs. Tightening sequence matters: lugnuts on four-bolt wheels should be tightened in a star or cross pattern to ensure even clamping. Five-bolt wheels follow a similar principle. Vehicle manufacturer specifications vary widely, ranging from roughly 80 foot-pounds on compact cars to 150 foot-pounds or more on trucks.
The term lugnut itself derives from lug, referring to the protruding lugs or studs on the hub, combined with nut for the threaded fastener. The lug pattern (number and spacing of studs) is vehicle-specific and non-interchangeable; wheels and lugnuts must match the hub geometry precisely. Lugnut failures occur primarily from corrosion (seized studs), vibration loosening (where the fastener gradually unthreads), or mismatched tightening torque during tire service.
In the trade, selecting the correct lugnut type is essential during wheel replacement, hub service, or brake work. Stainless steel lugnuts resist corrosion better than plated steel but cost more. The cone angle of the nut seat (60 degrees is most common, but 45 and 90 degree variants exist) must match the wheel's corresponding seat or a poor fit and uneven loading results. Thread size, pitch, and nut diameter all vary by manufacturer and model year, making cross-compatibility rare and requiring careful verification against the vehicle's specification sheet.
