LVW: the military truck that swims
An LVW, or landing vehicle wheeled, is a six-wheeled amphibious truck designed to ford rivers, traverse muddy terrain, and cross beaches under load. The vehicle combines the cargo capacity of a heavy truck with the water-crossing ability of a purpose-built amphibious platform, making it invaluable for military supply operations in regions without developed infrastructure.
The core engineering challenge in an LVW is maintaining buoyancy while carrying useful payload. To achieve this, the hull is sealed and compartmentalized; the crew cabin, engine bay, and cargo area are all pressure-tight or equipped with drainage. Wheels are typically low-pressure or specialized flotation tires. Many designs feature a central tire inflation system that allows operators to lower pressure for soft terrain and raise it for road speed, improving both flotation and traction without stopping.
Water crossing and terrain mobility
On water, an LVW relies on its buoyant hull form and waterproofed drivetrain. Most models use a propeller or jet-drive supplementing the wheels, though some older designs depend on wheel propulsion alone. Snorkel tubes route engine intake and exhaust above the water line. Shallow fording (to about 1.5 metres) is often achieved without special preparation; deeper water requires sealing hatches and deploying flotation aids. On land, the six-wheel configuration and high ground clearance allow the vehicle to climb soft sand, traverse ditches, and navigate rutted supply routes where standard trucks would bog down.
Payload on modern LVWs ranges from 5 to 15 tonnes depending on design generation and engine output. The trade-off between amphibious capability and load capacity means these vehicles are never as spacious or efficient as purpose-built cargo trucks. Their real value emerges in expeditionary logistics: delivering ammunition, fuel, and rations to forward positions without waiting for bridge construction or road repairs.
The LVW designation originated with post-World War II military classifications and has persisted across NATO forces and allied nations. Variants exist for command, ambulance, and specialized roles, though the cargo and troop-transport versions remain most common. Corrosion from salt water and wear from amphibious operations demand rigorous maintenance schedules and material specifications: aluminum or stainless fasteners, sealed electrical connectors, and regular flushing of the drivetrain after water crossings.
