A spinner knob is a single handle, typically between 2 and 4 inches in diameter, that bolts or clamps to the rim of a steering wheel. It lets a driver steer with one hand while keeping the other free for gear selection, handbrake operation, or other controls. The knob sits perpendicular to the wheel plane and rotates with it, allowing the driver to grasp and turn it rather than gripping the wheel itself.
These devices are most common on heavy commercial vehicles: dump trucks, concrete mixers, delivery vans, and older agricultural equipment where the driver frequently operates auxiliary controls. On long hauls or repetitive operations like backing up to a loading dock, the spinner knob reduces fatigue on the dominant arm and shoulder. Older vehicles with high steering effort, before power steering became standard, made spinner knobs almost essential for single-handed maneuvers in tight spaces.
Construction and attachment
Spinner knobs are typically cast or forged from aluminum or ductile iron and mounted via a bracket that clamps around the wheel rim or bolts through the wheel itself. The knob must rotate freely on its mounting point and remain secure during emergency maneuvers. Quality units are balanced to prevent vibration. Mounting hardware must be checked regularly since vibration from rough roads can loosen fasteners, potentially causing the knob to shift or separate during steering.
Legal status varies by jurisdiction. Some regions classify spinner knobs as safety equipment when fitted to vehicles with manual steering or high steering effort, while others restrict or prohibit them in passenger vehicles on public roads. Commercial and industrial vehicle operators should verify local regulations before installation. Many modern vehicles with power steering and airbags do not accommodate spinner knobs due to wheel sensor placement and safety system design.
