A maroon is a pyrotechnic device fired into the air to produce a loud report and a visible burst of light or color. It consists of a rocket motor, a payload chamber, and a firing mechanism, typically launched from a small handheld or fixed launcher. The core function is to signal, warn, or summon across distance and noise, jobs where sight alone fails and sound must carry urgently over water or wind.
The device splits into two phases. The rocket motor accelerates the maroon upward to roughly 300 to 500 feet, depending on size and powder charge. At apogee or on a timer, the payload detonates, producing both the characteristic sharp crack and a visible cloud or burst. Maroons used for lifeboat crew recall typically fire from a boat station or signal tower; those for air raid warnings from civil defence posts. Color-coded variants signaled different events: red for danger, white for all-clear, though these conventions varied by region and service.
A typical maroon case measures 2 to 3 inches in diameter and weighs 2 to 8 pounds depending on application. The outer shell is usually paper or light cardboard, strengthened with hemp cord or tape. Older maroons used black powder or cordite; post-1950s designs shifted toward cleaner, more consistent commercial explosives. The report intensity, often 120 to 150 decibels, makes it audible across a harbor in rough weather, where voice, whistle, or siren may not cut through.
The name derives from the French word marron, meaning chestnut or brown, originally denoting the color of the burst or the appearance of the device itself. British maritime and military traditions embedded maroons into lifeboat stations and coastal defences. They remain part of the standard equipment for Royal National Lifeboat Institution stations, though electronic alternatives now supplement them. Misfire, damp powder, or weak containment were historical failure modes; modern manufacturing has much reduced these, but maroons remain pyrotechnic hazards requiring trained handling and proper storage in approved magazines.
