wing

A platform on either side of the bridge of a vessel, normally found in pairs.

A ship's wing is a narrow open platform projecting from either side of the bridge structure, typically 1.5 to 3 metres long and 0.6 to 1 metre deep. It serves as the primary station from which the master and bridge team direct vessel movements during maneuvering, docking, and tight-quarters navigation. Each wing extends beyond the wheelhouse envelope to give clear sightlines along the hull and to fixed reference points ashore, making them essential for precision handling that cannot be achieved from inside the enclosed bridge.

Wings are usually fitted with railings of 1 to 1.2 metres height, non-slip deck surfaces, and cable runs for ship-to-shore lines during mooring operations. Many modern designs include Samson posts, bitts, or cleats integrated into the wing structure. The surfaces must resist saltwater corrosion; modern wings are commonly fabricated from aluminium alloy or coated steel. Some vessels mount radar repeaters, rudder angle indicators, and engine order telegraphs on the wings to allow the conning officer to monitor engine response without returning inside.

Wings become especially critical during restricted-waters work: canal transits, river navigation, or berthing in confined spaces where the master needs unobstructed views of the vessel's relationship to quays, buoys, or other ships. Many incidents have occurred when masters relied solely on electronic position-fixing systems without maintaining visual contact from the wings. Conversely, spray, wind, and rough weather can make the wings untenable; in such conditions, the bridge team must work from the enclosed wheelhouse and rely on closed-circuit television systems and integrated navigation displays.

Variations and limitations

Larger container ships and tankers often have extended wings with walkways for accessing deck equipment or for safe passage during severe weather. Smaller vessels and some fishing boats may have minimal or no wings, relying instead on pilothouse windows with wide sight lines. On some older tonnage, the wings are partially enclosed with glass or canvas to protect personnel; fully exposed wings are now standard in new construction. The term is sometimes confused with flying bridge (an upper exposed platform) or bridge wing (which is effectively the same thing), though wing is the more formal maritime usage.

The name derives from the wing-like appearance of these symmetrical lateral protrusions. In naval architecture, good wing design balances visibility, weather protection, and structural efficiency. A wing that is too narrow restricts the officer's effective vantage point; one that is too long creates structural loads and cost without proportional benefit. The wings must also be designed to shed water and not trap seas during heavy weather, a consideration that drove modern designs toward sloping deck surfaces and open rail construction rather than the raised bulwarks found on older vessels.
