A metal master is a thin steel or aluminum sheet that carries ink to the rubber blanket cylinder in offset lithographic printing. It is the image-bearing surface in the printing press, mounted on the plate cylinder, and makes direct contact with the blanket that transfers ink to paper. The master holds both ink and a water-based fountain solution through chemical and physical properties of its surface.

Metal masters are produced by exposing a presensitized aluminum plate (typically 0.15 to 0.30 mm thick) to light through a negative or positive film. The exposed areas become ink-receptive (hydrophobic) while unexposed areas remain water-receptive (hydrophilic). After development, the plate is gummed or chemically treated to stabilize these regions. Modern masters can also be produced digitally by direct imaging systems that etch the plate surface without film.

The term master derives from the fact that this plate is the master from which all prints flow; it holds the original image information for the job run. In traditional terminology, operators distinguish between the master (the printing surface) and the blanket (the intermediate transfer surface), though both are essential to the offset process. A metal master typically runs for 10,000 to 1,000,000 impressions depending on its construction, plate chemistry, and press conditions.

Variants and wear patterns

Common degradation occurs at edges where the fountain solution cannot properly wet the plate, allowing ink to spread into non-image areas. Scumming (unwanted ink deposits) and blinding (loss of ink in image areas) are the primary failure modes. Scratches, abrasions, or drying out of the gum layer reduce image definition. Storage conditions matter: masters must be kept dry and protected from light, and some require special covers to prevent oxidation of the aluminum surface.

Modern variant plates include waterless masters that use silicone layers instead of chemical gumming, reducing water consumption but requiring tighter temperature control. Long-run masters are manufactured from thicker stock or coated aluminum to withstand hundreds of thousands of impressions. Bimetal plates (copper over steel) and even trimetal plates (chromium over copper over steel) are used in highest-volume shops where wear resistance justifies the cost.

The metal master sits at the boundary between prepress and presswork. Prepress technicians handle exposure and processing; press operators monitor plate condition, manage the fountain solution pH and concentration, and replace the master when image quality degrades. Choosing the right master type depends on expected run length, ink type, substrate, and whether the job will be repeated regularly or run once.
