A block or table onto which the ink is spread, which is then transferred by the rollers or inkballs.

ink-block: the flat surface where ink gets rolled thin

An ink-block is a rigid, level surface, typically made of polished steel, stone, or cast iron, onto which printing ink is deposited and worked. It serves as the intermediate stage between the ink supply and the printing forme, allowing rollers or other applicators to reduce the ink to an even, thin film before transfer to the type or plate. In hand-operated presses, this is where the printer applies ink from the bottle or can and uses tools to achieve proper consistency and coverage.

The surface itself must be flat within tight tolerances, usually within 0.01 inch over several feet, because any deviation will cause uneven ink film thickness. Steel blocks are most common in commercial work due to durability; they resist wear from constant scraping and rolling. Stone blocks, historically common and still used in some letterpress shops, require more maintenance but hold ink well. The working surface is typically 18 to 36 inches long and 12 to 18 inches wide, sized to accommodate the rollers that travel across it.

Ink film and transfer mechanics

Ink on the block must reach a specific thickness, usually 0.001 to 0.002 inch, to transfer cleanly without puddling or streaking. A printer spreads raw ink by hand with a palette knife or spatula, working it into a thin layer, then rolls it multiple times with hand-rollers (sometimes called brayers) or mechanical rollers. Each pass thins and distributes the ink evenly. The rollers themselves are typically made of composition material, leather, or modern synthetic compounds that grip ink without absorbing too much of the vehicle.

Problems arise when the block surface becomes damaged, scored, or contaminated with dried ink or debris. A pit or scratch in the block will create a high or low spot where ink pools or breaks, resulting in visible defects on the printed sheet. Regular cleaning with solvent is necessary but must not damage the surface; some printers use gentle scraping with a rounded tool followed by wiping with cloth.

The ink-block's position in the printing workflow is critical but often overlooked. Ink quality and consistency start here. If the film is too thick, the rollers will not distribute it properly and will slip; if too thin, the type will not receive sufficient color. The block sits between the ink can and the forme, making it the point where the printer's skill and discipline directly affect every impression. In modern offset printing, the ink-block function is performed by the ink rollers themselves, which operate within the printing unit, but in relief and letterpress work the separate block remains essential.
